Uni-compartmental knee replacement is an option for a small percentage of patients with osteoarthritis of a part of the knee joint. In a uni-compartmental knee replacement , only the damaged compartment is replaced with metal and plastic. |

This is ideal for the younger patient in the 40's or 50's with uni-compartmental arthritis and this could be the first knee replacement for this patient (postponing TKR by fifteen years).
It could also be the last knee replacement for the very elderly patient after 80. It is also known as Uni-condylar or Uni- compartmental knee replacement surgery . |

Candidates |

Unicompartmental knee replacement is ideal in patients whose only the inner half of the knee is affected by osteo arthritis, the ACL is intact and the deformity, if any, is mild and does not exceed 15 degrees of the varus. |

The results are gratifying. The patient is relieved of the pain and is able to enjoy active lifestyle. It postpones the total knee replacement by about 15 years in a young patient. An elderly patient above 80 is able to do the activities of daily living which were painful or not possible earlier. |

The recovery after a unicondylar knee replacement is quick- the hospital stay is only 24-48 hours and the patient is able to resume the daily activities in a week's time. More rigours activities are allowed after 3-4 weeks. |
