Hip resurfacing (also called metal on metal hip resurfacing arthroplasty) improves mobility and reduces pain in the hip joint by replacing only the damaged surfaces of the joint with implants or prosthesis.

Hip Resurfacing is a bone preserving operation as most of the head and neck portion of the top end of the femur bone is retained. Hip resurfacing operation is usually recommended if the patient is under 55 and a healthy weight. Less bone is removed for hip resurfacing , making it easier to repeat the operation or to have a total hip joint replacement in later years.

This is a much-preferred process as in the process as much bone is retained as possible, only the damaged hip ball is reshaped and capped with a metal prosthesis unlike the traditional method of replacing the whole ball. Hip resurfacing operation is usually recommended if the patient is under 55 and a healthy weight.

Candidates

Hip Resurfacing is the treatment of choice for patients who have an active lifestyle, are not morbidly obese, are not allergic to the metal implants or have not acquired any infection. The average age group for such patients is generally considered to be less than 60. However, re-surfacing is indicated in conditions such as Osteo-arthritis: Primary/Secondary/Post-traumatic, inflammatory- arthritis such as RA, fractures or dislocations of the hip bone, avascular necrosis of the femoral head.

Recovery

You would be advised to walk the same or the next day after the surgery with the help of a walker. Rehabilitation by physiotherapists will also begin immediately to strengthen your hip joint and muscles and restore movement for walking and other normal daily activities.
